Skin Zen Mask with 10% Lactic Acid FOR DRY SKIN

If you have dry skin that cannot be moisturized no matter how many expensive hydrating products you throw at it, it’s time to take a look at your exfoliation situation. 95% of humans with dry skin that I speak with do not exfoliate at all, and this distresses me. Think about it-if you never exfoliate and dead skin builds up for months/years, HOW will those products you’re using ever come in contact with actual, live skin? NO WONDER your skin is so dry!

You should exfoliate your dry skin once a week. You may use chemical or physical exfoliation methods, it doesn’t matter. Physical exfoliation methods involve things like scrubby beads in face wash, scrubby brush thingys, clays, etc that scrape against the skin to remove dead skin layers. NOTE: (clears throat) DO NOT USE ANYTHING TO EXFOLIATE YOUR FACE THAT HAS CORNERS OR SHARP EDGES. No sugar/salt scrubs on your face, no ground up walnut shells/apricot kernels/whatever. The sharp edges will tear your skin, allowing surface bacteria access to deeper skin layers. This can cause irritation, inflammation, and breakouts. Chemical exfoliators use a chemical reaction to exfoliate dead skin. Alpha hydroxy acids (AHAs) are water-soluble chemical exfoliants, which beta hydroxy acids (BHAs) are oil-soluble chemical exfoliants. Common AHAs include lactic and glycolic acid, while salicylic acid is the most common BHA in skincare. Dry skin types should NEVER EVER use salicylic acid. EVER. This is because dry skin is already compromised, and removing what little oil may be present in dry skin will simply dry it out further, resulting in increased sensitivity to environmental irritants, increased levels of inflammation in skin, and premature aging.

This product is for dry skin, so I chose lactic acid as the chemical exfoliant in the formula. Lactic acid is an AHA, but it is less irritating and more moisturizing than glycolic acid, another AHA. Using this mask once a week will remove dead skin buildup and gently moisturize. Plus, it’s part of the Skin Zen line, so it is also loaded with skin-soothing anti-inflammatory ingredients like aloe vera, comfrey, and cucumber extracts. It’s the perfect product to remove buildup and get your skin ready for hydrating products!

IMPORTANT: All AHAs will increase your sun sensitivity for a few days after use. Either sunscreen up or get your Mrs. Roper on if you go outside after using this product.

INGREDIENTS EXPLAINED:

Aloe vera: Aloe vera has been shown to have anti-inflammatory, hydrating, and antioxidant activity with regards to skin. In this formula, it is present as both a moisturizing agent and an anti-inflammatory active.

Lactic Acid: Lactic acid is an alpha hydroxy acid (AHA), which are water-soluble chemical exfoliators. Lactic acid is less irritating and more moisturizing than its fellow AHA, glycolic acid. This makes it a wonderful exfoliation option for folks with dry skin types. In this formula, lactic acid is functioning as an exfoliant. NOTE: All AHAs will result in increased sun sensitivity for a few days after use. Be sure to sunscreen up if you plan on being outside and you’ve used this product recently.

Hydroxyethyl acrylate / sodium acryloyldimethyl taurate copolymer: This ingredient is the gelling agent for the serum. It is a Hydro-Swelling Droplet (HSD) form of emulsifier, and is used for cold emulsions, in which no ingredients are heated during the formulation of the product.

Rosehip oil: Rosehip seed oil has loads of antioxidants and unsaturated fatty acids, so it is very anti-inflammatory. In this formula, it is present as an emollient and anti-inflammatory active.

Camellia seed oil: Camellia seed oil is a fast-absorbing oil with antioxidant activity. It is present in this formula as an emollient.

Cucumber Extract: Anti-inflammatory extract that hydrates, softens, and cools skin.

Ceramide NP (and) ceramide AP (and) ceramide EOP (and) phytosphingosine (and) cholesterol (and) sodium lauroyl lactylate: Complex of ceramides that work together to restore barrier function and moisturize skin

Comfrey Extract: Anti-inflammatory and antioxidant ingredient.

Tocopherol: Tocopherol is Vitamin E, and acts as a preservative in this formula, preventing the oxidation of the oils in the product and increasing the shelf life.

Lactobacillus ferment: This ingredient is a preservative, and is responsible for preventing the growth of bacteria, mold, fungus, yeast, etc.

Phenoxyethanol: This ingredient is a preservative, and is responsible for preventing the growth of bacteria, mold, fungus, yeast, etc.

Fragrance: This is the scent that is added to the product. Fragrance oil manufacturers are not required by law to disclose what compounds are in their fragrance oils. However, some will tell you what is NOT in their fragrance oils, and I base my fragrance oil purchases on this information. I make sure my fragrance oils are free of phthalates and known carcinogens. Because fragrance may be a source of irritation in a product formula, I offer all my products fragrance free as well as scented.
