My Skin Zen line of products is full of anti-inflammatory active ingredients to reduce redness, edema, and irritation in skin. Inflammation is skin’s non-specific immune response to irritation or infection, so regardless of what the irritant is, the response is the same: redness, scaling, and swelling. By targeting inflammation with multiple anti-inflammatory active ingredients, Skin Zen products work wonders on eczema, sensitive skin, dermatitis, hives, bug bites, and even poison ivy.

Skin Zen Lotion is a lightweight lotion that absorbs quickly with a non-greasy feel. Anti-inflammatories like aloe, panthenol, allantoin, colloidal oatmeal, calendula butter, and cucumber extract help reduce the discomfort from the symptoms of inflammation. Besides helping with active inflammation, Skin Zen Lotion will also help keep sensitive skin calm and reduce its tendency to react.

This product is available scented with a light, airy scent or fragrance free. I recommend getting the fragrance free version if you are dealing with an inflammatory event. Fragrance can be irritating, and if your skin is already irritated, it’s best to avoid it.

Description

INGREDIENTS: distilled water, cetearyl alcohol (and) ceteareth-20, calendula butter, jojoba oil, grapeseed oil, colloidal oatmeal, cucumber extract, panthenol, cornstarch, cetyl esters, tocopherol, gluconolactone (and) sodium benzoate, fragrance, allantoin, bisabolol, EDTA

INGREDIENTS EXPLAINED:

Cetearyl alcohol (and) Ceteareth-20: This is the emulsifier in the formula. An emulsifier is a compound that is able to bind to both polar and nonpolar molecules in a solution. In skincare, an emulsifier is what holds the oil and water phases of the formula together. There are lots of different types of emulsifiers, with different properties. This particular emulsifier is what is known as an ‘oil in water’ emulsifier, because it emulsifies a small oil phase in a larger water phase.

Calendula butter: Calendula, or Marigold, is a plant that was historically referred to as “nature’s first aid” and is known for its traditional uses in treating and dressing minor skin irritations such as cuts and burns. This butter is a enriched with Calendula extract, a soothing, anti-inflammatory active ingredient.

Jojoba oil: Jojoba oil is a lightweight, fast-absorbing oil with a structure similar to that of sebum, which is produced by the skin. It is a great emollient to use in formulas for oily/combo skin because it won’t cause breakouts. In this formula, it is present as a fast-absorbing emollient.

Grapeseed oil: Grapeseed oil is another fast-absorbing, non-greasy oil. It is also a good oil for combo/oily skin, as it won’t cause breakouts either. It has a high concentration of antioxidants and unsaturated fatty acids. It is present in this formula as a fast-absorbing emollient.

Oatmeal (colloidal): Colloidal oatmeal is finely ground oatmeal (44 micrometer particle size) that acts as a skin soother and moisturizer.

Cucumber Extract:

Panthenol: This ingredient is able to penetrate skin fairly well and has softening and moisturizing properties. It also helps to soothe and protect irritated skin.

Cornstarch: This ingredient acts as a thickener in this formula.

Cetyl esters: This ingredient provides ‘slip’ to the formula, allowing the product to slide more easily across skin. It also acts as a thickener.

Tocopherol: Tocopherol is Vitamin E, and acts as a preservative in this formula, preventing the oxidation of the oils in the product and increasing the shelf life.

Gluconolactone (and) Sodium benzoate: This is the main preservative in this formula. It prevents the growth of bacteria, mold, fungus, yeast, etc.

Fragrance: This is the scent that is added to the product. Fragrance oil manufacturers are not required by law to disclose what compounds are in their fragrance oils. However, some will tell you what is NOT in their fragrance oils, and I base my fragrance oil purchases on this information. I make sure my fragrance oils are free of phthalates and known carcinogens. Because fragrance may be a source of irritation in a product formula, I offer all my products fragrance free as well as scented.

Allantoin:

Bisabolol:

EDTA: EDTA is a metal ion chelator. This means that it scours the solution for metal ions, and once it finds them, it binds them very tightly, which makes them no longer a danger. Metal ions are highly reactive molecules that can cause oxidative damage to proteins, lipids, and DNA in cells. They are known to cause allergic reactions in skin, and generate inflammation.

It actually absorbs and goes on to have the audacity to WORK!

Before I started using Dr. Jens products I had pink patchy skin with pimples and scabs. I thought I was just naturally that pink and the dry flakey patches must mean my skin is dry right? No. It was inflamed, angry and inflamed! After barely 2 months of using the full Skin Zen set(cleanser, toner, serum, eye cream and lotion) my face was transformed. My friend asked what foundation I was using, when I told her I wasn’t wearing ANY makeup at all, she didn’t believe me until I insisted she touch my face. My hormones are crazy so I still get breakouts but I do my best to leave them alone and let Dr. Jen take care of them now. My face is soft, supple and going to be 40 while folks will tell me(unsolicited!) they thought that I was in my 20s.

    Just buy it!
