Buckle up, it’s about to get ranty! I was looking up info on fast-absorbing oils for a post about choosing the right oils for your skin type when a random entry in my search results caught my eye. It was some derm talking about using oils to counter the dryness caused by using anti-acne products. So now you’re gonna get my angry ranting instead of a nice post about oil profiles.

(Clears throat) IF YOUR ANTI-ACNE PRODUCTS ARE DRYING OUT YOUR SKIN, FOR F**K’S SAKE STOP USING THEM! The answer is NOT ‘add another product into your routine.’ Also, STRAIGHT OIL IS NOT A GOOD GD CHOICE FOR MOISTURIZING, ESPECIALLY IF YOUR SKIN IS OILY! JFC x 10^23!

The scenario above, where your skin is oily and you get breakouts, so you use anti-acne products, which are nearly always too strong and end up stripping your skin of necessary moisturizing factors, so your skin gets dry, and then you put oil on your skin to moisturize it is the worst f**king advice I’ve ever seen. Like, I wanna go flip some tables, I’m so angry about it.

If your skin is oily and you are prone to breakouts, the LAST thing you want to do to your skin is apply loads of anti-acne products. They are designed to be drying, and using multiple products that dry your skin out is a terrible idea. When you strip your skin with these products, you cause your oil glands to kick into overdrive to replace the lost oil, leading to an endless cycle of shininess and breakouts. When you strip your skin, you also create compromised skin that can no longer protect you from environmental irritants and infectious organisms. Putting some f** king rosehip oil on your sh*t at that point is not gonna do a damn thing.

Here is my advice for folks with this skin type: First, use a lotion-based, mild, preferably anti-inflammatory cleanser as your main cleanser. NO EXFOLIANTS FOR EVERY DAY USE I WILL COME TO YOUR HOUSE AND MOM-VOICE YOU SO HARD IF YOU EXFOLIATE EVERY DAY. No more than every other day, once a day, use an exfoliant of some kind, whether it’s chemical or physical. On the days you exfoliate, DO NOT use any products containing lactic, glycolic, or salicylic acids or benzoyl peroxide. If you use witch hazel as a toner, DO NOT use it the same day you exfoliate. If at any point your skin becomes dry from using a product, stop using it immediately. Use moisturizer! (Unless it’s summer and you live somewhere hot and muggy, in which case, just try to moisturize at night) Look for oils that won’t clog your pores in it, like jojoba, grapeseed, hemp seed, and evening primrose. DO NOT use a moisturizer with AHAs or BHAs if you’re using a cleanser that contains them that day. Think of it like this: you only want one product in your regimen each day that is exfoliating. Set up your daily routine so that you aren’t doubling up on acids/exfoliants.

Here’s a sample regimen using my products, but this will work with other brands’ stuff too.

DAY 1: AM: Wash with Calming Cleanser (mild, anti-inflammatory, lotion-based cleanser). Tone with any of my toners (all of them are anti-inflammatory). Moisturize with Mega Antioxidant Serum (skin protective, anti-inflammatory) or Skin Zen Serum (anti-inflammatory).
Day 1 PM: Wash with Calming Cleanser. Tone. Moisturize with Mattifying Serum (oil control, decreases sebum production)or City Skin Night Cream (reduces sebum production, anti-aging).

DAY 2: AM: Wash with Five Fruit face wash (physical and chemical exfoliation) or Anti-Acne face wash (chemical exfoliation) if your acne is severe. Tone with any of my toners. Moisturize with Mega Antioxidant Serum or Skin Zen Serum.
DAY 2 PM: Wash with Calming Cleanser. Tone. Moisturize with Mattifying Serum or City Skin Night Cream. (Do not use these if you’re exfoliating at night, use Skin Zen instead)

DAY 3: see Day 1.

And so on. You can switch up day/night exfoliation, and of course, there are other product combinations that will work, I was just trying to illustrate my point that you should not be dumping a nuclear arsenal of oil control products on your face. More is not better. More is f**king up your skin. Keep calm and put the gd face oils TF down. (End rant) #themoreyouknow
